San Andreas (A.K.A. The Rock punches an Earthquake: The Movie) review (kinda)

So, I’m going to be really progressive here and do spoilers and non-spoilers in the one review. Non-spoilers section; super dumb, yet thoroughly entertaining. Alright let’s talk some spoilers.

Didn’t really care for the obviously CGI car flipping down a hill to open the movie. However, I did enjoy the rescue scene that followed it. I would have liked to see more of Ray’s team at work, they all seemed pretty cool and I was really looking forward to see Colton Haynes play off The Rock. But you can’t have everything I guess.

I will say, that flipping car scene is actually really smart. How, you ask? Because it makes the rest of the CGI in the movie look much better than it probably is. Not that the CGI was bad to begin with, it just helps out a bit. I feel like Avengers: Age of Ultron did the same thing with their opening action sequence. Hopefully this doesn’t become a trend.

I was a little disappointed that they killed off that Tim guy (or Kim, or whatever). I get why they killed him, to show that anyone could die at any moment. But I really liked that character and wanted to see more of him, probably a testament to Will Yun Lee’s acting. Personally I felt his death, which really set the pace for every death you see after that. So…good job, Peyton.

Speaking of, let’s talk about Alexandra Daddario’s death. No surprise that she was revived. Having her die—paired with the way the scene was going—seemed a little too dark for what the movie was going for. But when she initially drowns, that was really rough. Having to seat there and watch her convulse until she passes out, as helpless as Dwayne Johnson’s character, sucked. And to be honest, it was a little brutal considering the majority of the audience this movie drags in, are barely into their teens. Well at least the session I was at.

Like I said at the start, super dumb, but overall I’m glad I saw it.
